Starting today for the entire month of February, South Africa’s premier poet and MC Tumi Molekane will share 28 songs – one for each day, and for free.
For the fans who will have come on board in the latter part of his 12-year recording history, this is an introduction to an exemplary catalogue in which names like Immortal Technique, Jack Parrow, and Lebo Mashile have featured slots.
They’re songs familiar for a legion of fans that will reinforce the inimitable history that Tumi shares with them as the leader of the period-defining Hiphop/Jazz/funk band Tumi and The Volume, with whom he galvanised world audiences via three critically acclaimed albums. They also know him as the rapper’s rapper who, two albums deep, is virtually without parallel on the South African Hip-hop scene, though his artistic offspring here are plenty.
As with any successful career, change is constant and Tumi’s approach is to embrace it. With the era of Tumi and the Volume officially over, a new one begins.
