Newcomers offer flexibility

TimeOut looks at newcomers The Muffinz and Delux Fam and what they have to offer.

TKZEE, Denim, and Ghetto Lingo are among the popular male groups in Mzansi's music scene.

We all know how group dynamics can serve to either build or break them as the group's career matures. With new groups like Liquid Deep and Micasa finding unprecedented success on the music scene, we look at newcomers The Muffinz and Delux Fam and what they have to offer.

The Muffinz

Who are they?

The group began in 2010. It is made up of five young musicians from around Gauteng. They all play musical instruments: Keke on drums, electric guitarists and vocalists Atomza and Simz. Mthae is the acoustic guitarist, and a capella singer and bassist Skabz.

The Muffinz classify their genre as soulful and eclectic.

There is a Jimmy Dludlu and John Legend effect in their music. Their CD, Have You Heard, has 10 tracks with afro-pop elements with strong bass guitars and their soulfulness comes from their voices. Check out their catchy track called Ghetto.

How the group came about?

Mthae, Simz and Atomza met in the University of Johannesburg where they were both students. They joined the choir and formed a band in 2010. Keke and Skabz joined the group in 2011 to complete the Muffinz's ensemble.

What makes them different ?

They play live music and band members play musical instruments. Everyone sings, there is no lead singer.

Their style:

Muffinz styling has a high fashion element. They represent a chic and gentleman's look.

Delux Fam

Who are they?

They are the new kids on the block from the West Rand. The youngest in the group is 23 and the oldest 47. This group is made up of eight members with each contributing unique styles of music from hip-hop and kwaito to rap.

Delux recently contributed vocals and beats to Metro FM's funny duo Amon  Mokoena and Thato Mataboge's 12 track house album, which was released in June this year. Their first single Feeling Good has been well received by radio stations.

How did the group come about?

The singers know each other from the same neighbourhood in Katlehong and decided to form a group early this year.

What makes them different?

They say that their strength is in their versatility.

Genre and composition

Delux is versatile. They mix a afro-soul and dance music.

Their music also has a tribal and deep house feel.
