SHE'S young and she's mixing hip-hop. She's also creating a name for herself by exhibiting impressive DJing skills.

Nonqaba Nozuko Rwaxa, aka Ms Cosmo, was born in Diepkloof, Soweto.

The 24-year-old's childhood dream of becoming a singer is not too far removed from the dream she is living now. And what's even more impressive about her is that she boasts a BCom degree.

Under the guidance of DJ ZanD, Ms Cosmo sharpened her skills on vinyl at the Fuse Academy, a DJing school co-founded by DJ Zinhle. She's part of the line-up on YFM's Tuesday YTKO feature and is also a VJ on Channel O's Bassment. Ms Cosmo has played alongside the likes of Black Coffee, DJ Dimplez and DJ Fresh.

She even played at Trey Songz's SA Tour Launch Party last year. We had a chat with her..

Who is Ms Cosmo?

I am a normal girl who is trying to make a living by doing the best I can.

What did you want to do when you were growing up?

I wanted to be a singer. But I realised that I was not a great vocalist (laughs). Because music was my passion, I went on to study music.

Which challenges have you faced as a female DJ?

Not being taken seriously was difficult.

How did you get into the music industry?

After finishing at Fuse, I had to practise to master my skills. My friends supported me throughout that time.

Your career highlights so far?

Playing at Newtown Music Festival this past weekend.

How do you prepare for a show?

It depends on the audience. For example, if I'm playing for the youth, I must play more of an urban hip-hop sound.

What makes you different from other females?

I play hip-hop.

Name three songs that mean something to you?

1 We are the World by Michael Jackson. I sang it at my aunt's anniversary.

2 No, No, No by Destiny's Child, because it brought me closer to music.

3 How do you Feel by HHP, Omg! It made me fall in love with local hip-hop.

Ms Cosmo's firsts:

First romantic date? It was in 2006 when my boyfriend cooked a Valentine's Day meal for me.

First prize achieved at school? I won an academic award in Grade 7.

First pay cheque? In my first year at varsity I was a gymnastics coach . it didn't pay much but I was happy.

First driving lesson? It was in 2005, it was fun.

First media coverage? Last year in hip-hop magazine Hype.

First crush? Oh no! I don't believe you are doing this to me. It was with Joseph (blushes); we were in the same class back in primary school.
