UNTIL this weekend I never even imagined myself dancing to jazz music.

But that changed on Friday night when I attended the Oude Meester Ekurhuleni Comes Alive Jazz festival at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.

Themed Celebrating 11 Years of Jazz, the event featured jazz stars Jimmy Dludlu and Judith Sephuma, as well as Isabel Novella of Mozambique and Bholojo Ngubane of Swaziland.

The artists' performances made me realise why jazz has so many followers. It is a refreshing genre enjoyed by revellers of all ages.

They packed the hotel's conference centre hall, which came alive when Jimmy Dludlu displayed his guitar wizardry. Equally entertaining were jokes by up-and-coming Pretoria comedian Sipho "Schoolboy" Ntuli.

Judith Sephuma took to the stage to accompany Dludlu on vocals and proceeded to bring the house down. Thakane Mahlatsi, who travelled from Pretoria for the show, said she was particularly impressed by Dludlu and Sephuma.

- The festival was hosted by the Birchwood Hotel OR Tambo Conference Centre in partnership with Oude Meester brandy, Ekurhuleni municipality, Kaya FM and Sowetan.
