IN TRYING to showcase and develop new talent in filmmaking, Multichoice has established a competition for aspirant filmmakers.

The Film Talent Celebration will give young people in this field a platform.

Itumeleng Letebele, of MultiChoice, says the competition is an acknowledgment of the immense filmmaking talent that exists in South Africa.

"The competition provides industry players with an opportunity to reflect on the achievements as an industry," he says.

"This is a nationwide search for the best filmmakers, and who are able to craft authentic stories through short films.

"The competition presents numerous opportunities for the winners, such as their films being promoted and broadcast on the DStv platform.

"We encourage people to submit their short films before February 29 (tomorrow). The length of the films has to be between three to 10 minutes."

The winners will win cash prizes of between R20,000 and R50,000.

The panel of judges includes Kgomotso Matsunyane, Helen Kuun, Eve Rantseli, Teboho Mahlatsti and Steven Markovitz.

"All of our judges are well respected within the film industry and each has extensive experience in the film industry," says Letebele.

"We have also taken great pains in selecting judges who have an eye for identifying great talent."

Steven Markovitz, film producer and co-founder of Encounters Film Festival, says: "This competition represents a unique platform for filmmakers to show their talent and win great cash prizes.

"It will raise the profiles of the winning individuals significantly, and give them an opportunity to get cash for their short films."

Judges will select winners for categories such as best production, best director, best editor, best sound, best cinematography and best newcomer.
