HIP-hop artist Tebogo "ProVerb" Thekisho has joined forces with renowned director Gavin Wratten as producer of Idols.

ProVerb, Idols ' popular host, will call the shots behind the scenes.

The eighth season of M-Net's hit talent competition kicked off in Sandton, Johannesburg, at the weekend.

"ProVerb has his finger on the pulse of the local music scene. We are excited about his extended role on the production side," said M-Net's communications manager Lani Lombard.

"Internationally, it is not unusual for on-camera talent to be involved in production," said Lombard, citing the example of original American Idols judge Simon Cowell.

"Since joining Idols as a host in season 6, ProVerb has displayed an instinctive insight into what it is that makes the show so special.

"He has made a tremendous contribution to the success of the past two record-breaking seasons."

ProVerb, a rapper who launched his television career on Channel O, has produced several successful albums, including The Book of ProVerb, Manuscript and Write of Passage.

"If you don't come and show us what you're made of, you will never know if you could have made it," he warned.

ProVerb was the technical producer of The Fresh Breakfast Show on YFM. The show featured DJ Fresh. He also produced The Avenue 3 to 6 with Glen Lewis and Idols judge Unathi on Metro FM. ProVerb can be heard on air on 94.7 Highveld Stereo.

He has also hosted two Miss South Africa broadcasts and lectured in TV production and radio at Damelin College.

Season eight of Idols is a co-production between M-Net and Mzansi Magic and will be broadcast on both channels from June 2012.

Auditions will be held at uShaka Marine World in Durban on Saturday; at Grand West Casino Entertainment World in Cape Town on February 18 and at the Walter Sisulu Hall in Kliptown, Soweto, on February 25.
