Janet will 'scream' in Jozi

JANET Jackson, Michael Jackson's superstar sister, has selected a special song to perform for her Johannesburg fans on Friday and Saturday at Montecasino's intimate Teatro.

Jackson, who has carved out a successful musical career parallel for herself to that of her late brother, the King of Pop, has chosen her number one tribute hit Scream from her brother's album Michael Jackson's HIStory Past, Present, and Future, Book I.

Jackson customarily dedicates a selected number one song to each of her worldwide tour stops. Her current tour,Number Ones: Up Close & Personal, is her biggest world tour so far.

But details of the tour are closely guarded with elaborate security measures having been put in place from the moment the artist lands at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, right through to the moment she gets the show on the road on the Teatro's stage at the weekend.

"Janet has also decided not to give any media conference nor any one-on-one interviews. The same goes for telephonic interviews.

"The singer needs a rest in Johannesburg before her performances since she will be flying to South Africa straight after her shows in Australia," a source close to the organisers said.

But Jackson spared a few words for her Johannesburg fans, "Hey you guys, I can't wait to get to Johannesburg and perform for all my fans there!"

The tour, in which the superstar set out to perform a selection of songs from her impressive 35 number one hits, also includes Asia and North America. She has extended her tour to cover cities beyond the original planned 35 destinations.

The singer has been portrayed in the Jackson family of stars as mainly living a controversy-free life - unlike her late brother, who during his lifetime was regarded as eccentric. Her controversial younger sister, Letoya, has also been described as an extrovert of sorts.

But Jackson's clean reputation took a knock in 2004 when the talented star was involved in her by-now infamous "wardrobe malfunction" scandal.

This incident was broadcast on television when Justin Timberlake ripped Jackson's breastplate off to reveal a star on her one breast during a performance at the Super Bowl.

At first Jackson was quoted as saying it was a "wardrobe malfunction" but she later changed her statement and confessed to changing the show without the approval of anyone.

The incident, which was watched by CBS viewers, resulted in a court case with the singer being issued with a $550000 (R4.3-million) fine in July 2008.

After the incident CBS reported they had received 582000 complaints about this split-second of "boob exposure" regarded as indecent by American law.

Besides this incident, which is now infamously known as "Nipplegate", Jackson has managed a relatively clean and controversy-free lifestyle throughout her car eer.

The popular singer will wrap up her South African tour on Tuesday in Cape Town at Grandwest Casino's Arena in Goodwood.
