THE much-anticipated Mpumalanga sixties did not take place on Saturday after the stage collapsed.

The stage, erected inside Mbombela Stadium, was blown away by a strong wind a few hours before the show was set to start.

No one was injured.

Josta Sekgotla of Mo Lite, the event organisers, said he could not believe what had happened.

"After working so hard to bring the show together, it is very sad that such a thing had to happen," he said.

He said they lost thousands of rands because they had already paid for the venue and the artists had also been paid their deposits.

The company had first failed to bring R&B sensation John Legend to perform at the show.

The popular event attracts more than 30000 people every year.

Artists who were billed to perform included Zakes Bantwini, Teargas, Zahara and DJ Sbu.

To make matters worse people started to demand refunds, blaming the organisers for letting them down.

A fan, Lucia Modise, who drove all the way from Johannesburg, said: "It would be great if I could get my money back."

The organisers were expected to hold a meeting late yesterday to decide whether to organise another show or give people a refund people.
