Poets honour the great Don Mattera

SOME of the country's most talented poets will take to the stage on March 3 to pay tribute to seasoned poet and humanist Don Mattera's poetry collection, entitled Azanian Love Song.

This is a famous and award-winning collection of powerful poems that reflect Mattera's experiences during the 70s and 80s and also during the Sophiatown era.

Mattera's prolific writing has inspired and cultivated the seeds of South African literature and it is because of this achievements that the poets celebrate Mattera's profound work.

The gig, called Lyrics of our Song, will take place at Shikisha (formerly Horror Cafe) in Newtown, Johannesburg. It will feature a power-packed performance by some of the best poets to emerge from the Jozi spoken-word scene.

The line-up will include the theatrical voice of the legendary Prophet JD, the smart walking-talking, amazing Masoja Msiza, the heavenly sounds of the genius Mpho Molikeng, the Bob Marley of poetry Zwesh Fi Khush and the great Mak Manaka.

And the father himself, Mattera, will be the guest speaker.

The show will start promptly at 6pm and the cover charge is R50.
