It's the real deal for jazz bassist Sindi

SINDI Nene, a Top 3 finisher in season six of Idols, has landed a five-album contract with Universal Music

Yesterday Universal Music offered her a five-album recording contract, a deal that was part of the Idols competition.

"When Universal Music told us they can only take one of us after the competition, which might not necessarily be me, it was scary," a relieved Nene said.

Last year she put her studies on hold to concentrate on the competition, making the Top 3. An accomplished bass player, she was studying for a diploma in jazz and popular music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal at the time.

"I got a call in December from Dharam Sewraj, production director at Universal, telling me they had decided to exercise their option on me and would like me to sign under their label," Nene said.

"After persistent phone calls from Sewraj I realised he meant business. A 40-page contract was delivered and I had the whole month to familiarise myself with it before signing on the dotted line."

Nene is back in Johannesburg and is busy working on new material for her debut album.

"I have never been so excited in my life," Nene said. "My biggest dream is to be a composer and hopefully one day I will realise my dream. I really am grateful to know that I now have that opportunity."
