THINK Theatre's acclaimed staging of Shakespeare's Othello returns to the Playhouse Opera from February 7 to March 11, presented as previously in association with the Playhouse Company.

Geared mainly for secondary school pupils studying Shakespeare's stage tragedy as a setwork, the production is again directed by award-winning actress Clare Mortimer, herself an accomplished writer and an experienced English teacher.

Othello stars Farai Gwaze in the title role, playing opposite Josette Eales as Desdemona and Clinton Small as Iago, with Janne Ramos-Violantes as Iago's wife, Emilia.

Also featured in the exceptionally strong cast are Loyiso MacDonald, Michael Gritten, Darren King, Marc Kay, Clare Mortimer, Adam Dore, Janna Ramos Violantes, Bryan Hiles and Rowan Bartlett.

The production garnered much critical acclaim during its previous seasons, when it played to packed houses.

"With its themes of racism, love, jealousy and betrayal, Shakespeare's timeless tragedy remains powerfully relevant to present-day audiences," Gwaze says.

The Durbanite adds that the production "will be a big one" for the City.

"We have noticed a slump in the theatre-going audience in Durban and it is productions like this one that encourages young theatre-goers to go to the theatre.

Gwaze says: "For those who love Shakespeare you will get classical theatre; for those who want to enjoy the production there are modern and realistic elements as well." Performances are at 9am and noon daily - Mondays to Fridays, with a public performance on February 17 at 7pm. Tickets cost R40 (R60 for adults at public performance).
