Diet meets dance in TV reality show

OVERWEIGHT South Africans are shaking their booties in a bid to shed kilos at the new SABC1's reality dance show - Dance Your Butt Off

The show started last Tuesday and will run for 26 weeks. It is the local version of the American hit series Dance Your Ass Off. It will see porky competitors paired with professional dancers.

Not only will the contestants have to impress the panel of judges, the live studio audience and viewers with their dance routines in a variety of genres, their overall performance each week will also be based on how much weight they've lost.

Diet meets dance as full-figured participants are required to lose weight through proper nutrition and then have to shake and rattle their rolls in front of the nation.

The dance scores are combined with the weight loss, and each week the "loser" with the lowest score is sent home.

This heavyweight reality show is presented by Zone 14 actress Relebogile "Lebo" Mabotja, while the judges are choreographer-dancer Somizi Mhlongo, Metro FM DJ Sbu Leope and actress-dance instructor Khabonina Qhubeka.

South Africa is a nation of fatties, with a recent study commissioned by health care company GlaxoSmithKline finding that 61percent - or nearly two-thirds - of South Africans are overweight, obese or morbidly obese.

And it's not only adults who are piling on the pounds: 17 percent of South Africa's children aged 1 to 9 are not just overweight, but obese.

What is perhaps even more disconcerting is that we are in denial: 78 percent of our nation's obese people think they are healthy, while 49 percent of South Africans do not exercise at all.

But obesity is a major cause of cardiovascular disease, with excess weight putting pressure on the heart and increasing blood pressure, and in all likelihood leading to diabetes. At least 60 South Africans - three people every hour - die from heart attacks and strokes every day, according the Medical Research Council.

These disturbing statistics reveal that the majority of South Africans are walking time bombs, which makes embracing a healthy lifestyle and occasionally working up a sweat more critical than ever.

While delivering a hefty dose of entertainment, Dance Your Butt Off will also show viewers how eating properly and taking part in fun activities such as dancing can give them a new lease on life.

The show is one of the new presentations that form part of SABC1 Mzansi fo Sho's Reloaded Campaign.

Dance Your Butt Off airs at 6:30pm every Tuesday.
