Top artists meet at Africa festival

URBAN Voices International Festival, the annual arts feast of poetry and theatre featuring artists from Africa and the diaspora, is an important event on the local arts calendar.

The strength of the festival is its programming. Big names share the stage to perform poetry and theatre productions. The festival will once again deliver original, diverse and cutting-edge performances.

"As always the Southern African Arts Exchange has scouted far and wide, both locally and internationally, in search of the best, most talented and relevant poets and artists," Roshnie Moonsammy, executive director and founder of Urban Voices and its mother body, the Southern African Arts Exchange, says.

The festival will feature international award winning artists from hip-hop theatre and performance poetry from South Africa, Asia, Puerto Rico and the US.

"Urban Voices 2010 continues with our programmes of mutual learning with Africans in the diaspora talking with artists and people in South Africa. This is particularly important as we consolidate some of the gains of global events such as the 2010 Fifa World Cup and others, which present opportunities for people to connect, to enjoy and to work together to build solidarity through culture and arts for a just world, a vibrant and democratic Africa with informed citizens, " Moonsammy said.

The international hip-hop theatre segment will see Lemon Andersen in County of Kings, which is produced by Spike Lee. The Tony-Award winning poet from Russel Simmons' Def Poetry Jam on Broadway, produces an electrifying and compelling solo performance.

Schedule of performances for County of Kings: Joburg, October 16 at 3pm and 21 and October 22 at 8pm at the Market Theatre Lab; Cape Town: October 28 at 11am and October 28 at 8pm at the Baxter Theatre, Rondebosch.

Poetry Festival : Joburg: October 23 at Bassline, Newtown 8pm; Cape Town: October 27 at the Baxter Theatre , 8pm.

American Patricia Smith, who will be featured at the festival, is a writer, performer and academic with several international literary awards to her name.

Tony Award-winning poet Asian-American Beau Sia will also perform at the festival.

Local performers will include the dynamic and powerful poets and writers Lisa Combrinck, Natalia Molebatsi and MC Likwidskillz .
