Bonds follow rand stronger ahead of Janet Yellen’s speech

South African bonds took their cue from a firmer rand late on Friday‚ as global investors awaited a speech by US Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen at the annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole‚ Wyoming‚ later in the day.

At 3.24pm the R186 was bid at 8.940% and asked at 8.920% from a previous close of 9.060%. The R207 was bid at 8.190% and asked at 8.185% from a previous close of 8.310%.

Meanwhile US treasuries were firmer ahead of Yellen’s speech.

Investors were looking for hints on the timing of a possible interest-rate increase this year.

A slew of speeches from Fed officials of late have sounded a more optimistic tone on the prospect of hiking‚ but some fear weak productivity and economic growth data will keep the Fed sidelined‚ Dow Jones Newswires reported.
