Audi is recalling 850,000 of its A4 compact sedans to fix software that operates their airbags, the German carmaker said Thursday.

A spokesman at the company headquarters in Ingolstadt said the error meant airbags might not deploy during accidents.

The recall affects vehicles made since early 2012, 150,000 of which are in Germany and the remainder in other countries.

He said the error was discovered during an internal review.

The company, owned by Volkswagen Group, is investigating "a single-digit number" of accidents where it was conceivable that airbags had not deployed as a consequence of the bug.
