Keeping children safe on the roads

Road accidents are the biggest global killers of youngsters aged between 10 and 24. More than14, 000 road deaths in South Africa are reported every year.

According to statistics we have the highest per capita road death rates in the world.

Ditau Primary School together with Imperial I-pledge took the initiative to educate young children about road safety and the importance of having scholar patrollers in schools.

Hado Masudubele principal at Ditau Primary says the statistics of road safety are shocking and it is important to teach children the basic road rules.

Every year more that 570 children are killed in pedestrian accidents because motorists do not observe the road.

“There is a very serious need to teach kids about road safety. They are not accompanied by parents to school, therefore there is no safety guidance at all.

“It is our duty as teachers that we practice safety rules with the kids because they do not get those teachings from home,” Masudubele says.

Children at Ditau Primary enjoyed a day of teaching about road safety as well as painted the street.
