Nala municipality CFO gets 15 years for fraud

"Mr Mekgoe wrote a fraudulent cheque of R600,000 and deposited it in his transport business in 2008"

The chief financial officer of the Nala Municipality has been sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for fraud, Free State police said.

Danny Mekgoe, 32, was sentenced by the Bothaville Regional Court on Monday, Captain Stephen Thakeng said.

"Mr Mekgoe wrote a fraudulent cheque of R600,000 and deposited it in his transport business in 2008," Thakeng said.

A fraud case was opened by the municipality in December 2008.

Free State police commissioner Lt-Gen Khehla Sitole welcomed the sentence.

"I would like to thank the investigator for a thorough investigation he conducted and [which] led to this heavy conviction."
