TEACHERS and pupils at Fons Luminus High School in Diepkloof, Soweto, planted three trees donated by Primedia Outdoor to mark Arbor Day.
The gesture lends support to the ongoing work of the Sowetan-supported Soweto development committee, which seeks to revive the sprawling city economically, academically, culturally and in other sustainable developmental ways.
One of the committee's most prominent projects is the Maths, Science and Commerce Learning Centre project - held at Fons Luminus High School in Diepkloof on Saturdays - catering for Grade 12 pupils from the Fons Luminus, Madibane, Bopasenatla, Fidelitas, Diepdale and Namedi high schools.
The project seeks to help ensure the participating youngsters are well-prepared for the matric accountancy examinations, thanks to extra lessons conducted by Wits University's junior lecturers and volunteer accountancy students.
Led by councillors Vusi Sithole and Dan Padi, and academic Bheki Shongwe, the project seeks to improve the pupils' participation in mathematics, physical science and commercial subjects. The Wits University students conducting the accountancy classes are led by the institution's accountancy department leaders, Professor Jacky Arendse and senior lecturers Ryan Mabutho and Thandeka Hlongwa.
The specialised lessons - which are not to be seen as a rival to the Basic Education Department's nationwide Secondary Schools Intervention Programme - are due to culminate in a mock examination on October 8, and a major revision session on October 15.
The project is being supported by Sowetan, the SABC and SA Institute of Architects, among several nation-building partners.
