Gathering focuses on high schools

HIGH school pupils will form the majority at the SABC and Sowetan-hosted Youth Day commemoration event, whose theme is June 16 -What Have We Learnt - What Are We Still Learning?

This eighth yearly celebration of the brave emancipatory exploits of South Africa's youth is scheduled for Orlando West, Soweto, tomorrow.

Sowetan is the media and nation-building partner.

Musical performances - which are to be dominated by Struggle songs in the repertoire - will be presented by the Holy Cross Anglican Church Choir, SABC Choir, Soweto Youth Choir and Ihashi Elimhlophe.

Speakers will be business personalities Morakile Shuenyane, Ndaba Ntsele and Kedibone More, who were among the children who marched from Morris Isaacson High School protesting against Afrikaans as a compulsory medium of instruction; and Thandi Ndlovu-Molokoane, the sister of Hastings Ndlovu, who was the first young child killed when police opened fire on protesting youths.
