The inkabi rap founder and Brentwood ambassador Siyabonga Nene spent a night in jail after he was arrested on Thursday for allegedly moering his girlfriend and mother of his two-year-old daughter.

The 31-year-old rapper and former Isibaya actor, famously known as Big Zulu, is facing an assault charge after allegedly attacking his baby mama.

Nene allegedly grabbed her by the throat and threw her on the floor three times at their rented flat in Newtown, Joburg.

On Thursday the rapper was picked up by police at their flat and spent a night in jail before appearing at the Johannesburg magistrates' court on Friday.

The victim, who cannot be named to protect her minor child, told Sunday World it was the first time the rapper laid his hands on her but said he was always aggressive during their arguments.

"The problem started two weeks ago when I confronted him. He was sitting outside with his friends and two girls. I called him to the side and asked him who the girls were. That was not the first time [I found him hanging around with strange women]. I asked him because I needed to know why he keeps doing that and disregarding my feelings. He got aggressive but that time he walked away," she said.

She later told him she would move out because there was tension between them which was not healthy for the child.

She told Sunday World that she had been battling depression which was made worse by the abusive situation. As a result, she attempted suicide by trying to overdose on pills with alcohol.

"I sent him a message to tell him it was not worth it anymore, however, he rushed home and found me before I overdosed on the pills."

She claimed the rapper forbade her to go out with friends.

She said initially Nene was a caring person but his character changed when he became famous.

"I met him when he had nothing and stayed with his mother in the Vaal," she said.

Gauteng police spokesperson captain Lungelo Dlamini confirmed a cause of assault was opened and the accused appeared at the Johannesburg magistrate's court on Friday. Big Zulu couldn't be reached for comment at the time of going to print.
