Joseph "Smokin' Joe" Makaringe, Vincent "The Rock" Vuma and Eric Baloyi are some of the accomplished boxing personalities from Giyani who will be honoured on Saturday night.
They will be honoured during an international boxing tournament at Giyani Community Hall, promoter James Mathonsi said yesterday.
"We will be honouring living and dead boxing icons specifically from Giyani," said Mathonsi, adding that late boxing administrator Stanley Sono from Soweto would also be remembered
"He was at the forefront of the development of boxing in Giyani, so we as Hlanganisa Sport Promotions, together with the Giyani municipality, felt it was proper that we acknowledged his contribution to boxing," said Mathonsi, who learned the ropes from the legendary administrator who passed on in December.
Makaringe reigned supreme as the South African welterweight champion for six years with 10 defences before the tough-as-teak skeletal fighter, who was trained in Gauteng by Nick Durandt, eventually relinquished his belt.
Makaringe retired in 2007 due to a cataract in his right eye. He had an impressive record of 25 knockouts from 30 wins against four losses.
Vuma held the SA and WBC International and IBF Intercontinental junior middleweight belts. He was trained by Elias Tshabalala before bolting his stable to join Durandt. Vuma retired in 2009 after losing the SA title to Tshepo Mashego in what was the former champion's fourth defeat from 30 fights.
Baloyi is the iconic amateur boxing trainer and the father of retired former six-time world boxing champion Cassius Baloyi.
The tournament will be headlined by SA featherweight champion Oscar "Golden Boy" Chauke, who will bid for the second defence against Prince Ndlovu. Former national featherweight champion Sydney Maluleke will welcome Zimbabwean champion Tawada Chigwida in a non-title eight-rounder.
Renson Hobyane and Johannes Petersen will meet in an eight-rounder in the super middleweight class, while Pfariso Neluvhalani and Godfrey Nemukongwe will complete the programme with their bantamweight clash over eight rounds.
To make sure that women were not left out, Mathonsi included current bantamweight holder Bukiwe Nonina in a non-title fight against Zimbabwean Dyna Makube.
