ROYAL Eagles general manager Richard Makhoba has praised their supporters from around Durban for throwing their weight behind the wealthy National First Division side.

"Our people here want to see this team winning promotion to the top flight and are doing everything in their power to inspire the players. We are grateful for their continued support," said Makhoba yesterday.

"We had about 7000 people attending our match against Maluti FET College [at King Zwelithini Stadium] in Umlazi this weekend and this is really encouraging. We won the match and I can safely say we have turned the corner."

Eagles, who are owned by Durban millionaire couple Sbu and Shawn Mpisane, beat Maluti 3-2 to record their first win of the season.

The goals were scored by debutants Kabelo Mahlasela, Thulasizwe Mbuyane and Walter Maponyane. The trio were given a run after undergoing a special two-week training programme.

Mahlasela was signed from Orlando Pirates, while Mbuyane joined from Mpumalanga Black Aces and Maponyane was snatched from Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Maluti's goals were netted by Morema Likontsane and Malefetsane Rankati.

For coach Duncan Lechesa the win was the best response to calls for his head after a shaky start to the season.

"We pleaded with the supporters to be calm and give our technical team a chance to rebuild the team. You can't fire a coach after two matches. I'm happy that they listened," said Makhoba.
