FAROUK Abrahams has been handed the head coach role at Santos, having initially been installed in a caretaker capacity.

Abrahams confirmed his appointment yesterday and said it was all systems go as he seeks to get the Cape Town club back into the top-flight.

"I still have my goalkeeper academy, which was taking up my time, so I initially joined the technical team just to help out the goalkeepers a bit," Abrahams said. "But then I started enjoying it, I got that passion for coaching and decided to push it a bit further.

"I found I liked it, the players liked it and Santos liked what I was doing."

Abrahams said the club had discarded many of their more experienced players and were targeting youth.

"It is a very young squad, the only experienced guy at the moment is Tyren Arendse, who I will use as an anchor man in front of the back-four."

Santos open their NFD season at FC Cape Town on the weekend of August 23-24.
