THE South African athletics family will stage a 15km Vuyo Mbuli Memorial Road Race in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg, tomorrow.

The athletes will use the race, which starts at Virgin Active at 7am, to pay tribute to the celebrated radio and television presenter.

Mbuli, 46, collapsed and died of pulmonary embolism on Saturday while watching a rugby match in Bloemfontein.

He will be buried at the West Park Cemetery in Johannesburg today.

Mbuli was a member of the Soweto Cabal Athletics Club. He joined them in 2009 when he started taking athletics seriously.

Club chairman Rio Matlhaku said: "Vuyo added value to the club after joining us in 2009 when he was preparing for his first Comrades Marathon. It was like he was with us for years.

"His death has shocked us just as with many other South Africans, which is why we have decided to organise a road race in his honour. In fact, we are planning to make it an annual event, but we still have to speak to the family and other stakeholders ..."

Mbuli has competed in various ultra-distance events, including the Comrades, City-to-City and the Loskop marathons.

Athletics SA administrator Zola Majavu described the death of Mbuli as "a big loss".

Central Gauteng Athletics have also sent their condolences to the Mbuli family.
