A senior Wits University academic said free higher education is possible‚ but that it is not immediately possible.
“Wits management supports the students but no‚ it can’t be done now‚” said Mary Scholes‚ the head of the South African Climate Leadership Programme and a professor in the Wits School of Animal‚ Plant and Environmental Sciences.
She was speaking TMG Digital in the sidelines at the informal Wits general assembly.
“We want to work with students to come to an agreement on a strategy — possibly for six to nine months — and work with all stakeholders to get a solution for free education for all. But it can’t happen on Monday‚” said Scholes‚ who is also a member of the university council.
She said she didn’t want to see the academic calendar being wasted felt sorry for those students in their last year and expecting to graduate.
Scholes also expressed her disappointment about the general assembly being postponed.
