Two pharmacies have been shut down in Limpopo for contravening the Medicine Control Act‚ operating without a licence‚ fraud and theft.
The pharmacies were discovered during a province-wide operation by the Hawks’s Commercial Crime Unit on Thursday‚ according to a police statement issued on Friday.
A 34-year-old male nurse in Sekororo village‚ just outside Tzaneen‚ was arrested. During the search officers found medicine allegedly stolen from the Department of Health. Medicines requiring a license to be sold and a prescription to purchase were also found. The pharmacy was closed immediately.
Another pharmacy in Mamaila village near Sekgosese‚ about 70km from Tzaneen‚ was also closed.
It was allegedly using a license of registered pharmacy to operate. Large quantity of medicines‚ medical aid claim registers and other financial registers were seized.
The owner has not yet been arrested.
