Twenty-one people were injured during severe thunderstorms in Harding, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday evening, provincial emergency medical services said.

Eight were injured by two separate lightning strikes, and one person by hailstones, spokesperson Robert McKenzie said.

Twelve people were injured when roofs were blown off houses and walls collapsed.

Paramedics were having difficulty reaching patients, who were mainly in the KwaMachi area, due to the heavy wind, rain, hail, and lightning.

It was not immediately clear how many houses had been damaged. Some of the injured were taken to nearby clinics and hospitals by residents.

Additional ambulances were being sent from Port Shepstone.
