The National Commissioner of Correctional Services‚ Zach Modise‚ will tomorrow officially open an abattoir at Baviaanspoort Correctional Centre.

“The recapitalised and revamped abattoir will provide meat to the centre and other nearby management areas and also be used to equip offenders with abattoir skills‚” the department said in a statement.

The abattoir is accredited to slaughter pigs and cattle with an average of 60-90 pigs slaughtered weekly‚ depending on the demand.

“The abattoir will not only benefit offenders. Unemployed youth will also be skilled and surrounding communities from poor backgrounds will benefit from the meats as part of the Department’s poverty alleviation programme‚” the department added.

The initiative is in line with Minister Michael Masutha’s statement in his 2015/16 Budget Vote Speech that “Correctional Centres will adopt a particular community and share their expertise and advanced models for food production‚ and expose unemployed youths to technical skills”.
