The Presidency said yesterday new one-stop health service centres — including mobile units in neighbouring countries — would be established for former and current mine workers in the 2015/16 financial year.
The newest centres would be established in Northern Cape and Limpopo.
The Department of Health started establishing these centres in 2014 to bring health and compensation services to former and current mine workers in mining towns and in labour-sending areas.
One-stop service centres have already been established in Mthatha in Eastern Cape as well as in Carletonville in Gauteng.
The Mthatha centre was fully funded by government and about 3‚000 former mine workers have already made use of its services.
The Carletonville centre was established with partial funding from the Chamber of Mines for capital costs and operations‚ and more than 1‚500 current and former miners have made use of its services.
