Municipal ward by-elections will take place in five provinces on Wednesday‚ the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said on Monday.
The by-elections — in the Free State‚ KwaZulu-Natal‚ Limpopo‚ North West and the Western Cape — will be contested by 119 candidates in 27 wards.
One of these‚ in the North West’s Mamusa (Schweizer-Reneke) Municipality‚ is uncontested and no by-election will take place.
The ward‚ the IEC said‚ was previously represented “by the African National Congress and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor”.
The candidates in Wednesday’s polls represent nine parties‚ while two are independents.
The by-elections also include a municipal-wide vote in the Mtubatuba Municipality‚ which was dissolved earlier this year.
Voters there will be given two ballot papers — one for the ward and one for the proportional representation candidates.
Voting stations are expected to open at 7am and polls close at 9pm.
A total of 119 375 voters were registered in the 114 voting districts where by-elections were scheduled.
