Of the 1 083 motorists screened for driving under the influence of alcohol at roadblocks in the Western Cape at the weekend‚ 15 arrests ensued.

The highest breath alcohol reading‚ according to the results of of the Provincial Traffic Services’ blitz announced on Monday morning‚ was 1.16mg/1 000ml recorded in Somerset West – or four times over the legal limit of 0.24mg/1 000ml.

“A total of 2 091 vehicles were screened for speeding‚ of which 206 speeding offences were recorded. A total 167 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R222 000‚” the Provincial Traffic Services’ statement read.

Two traffic-related fatalities were recorded.
