On, 6th October 2013 marked the closure of Older Persons Week, which was launched by President Jacob Zuma on 29 September under the theme: The future we want, what older persons say.
Older persons have knowledge and wisdom which is the foundation of building a better life for all. Government has over the years ensured that elderly's dignity is restored and that society works towards ensuring a better life for them.
Government has significantly changed the lives of older persons for the better, through the provision of free essential services such as water, health, housing and energy in various municipalities and districts. However, the elderly are still affected by the changing trends in the population, which produce numerous social, economic, environmental and political challenges as well as opportunities.
Acting CEO of GCIS, Phumla Williams says, "Older persons are incredible assets to the nation. Government needs active participation and support of communities, civil society and faith-based organisations to create an enabling environment for the protection and promotion of our elderly. It is in this spirit that we encourage all South Africans to continue to protect and celebrate Grandparents Day beyond today, 6th October 2013 by showing the elderly love, care and support.
South Africans are reminded to appreciate and honour the role that grandparents have played in their lives and their meaningful contribution to the creation of a democratic South Africa.
