EFFORTS to suspend Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi failed yesterday but investigation into the managing of the labour federation will go ahead.

Cosatu has held its central executive committee (CEC) meeting since Monday and a report on how Cosatu was allegedly mismanaged was supposed to have been tabled.

In March the CEC appointed a team, including labour lawyer Charles Nupen and former president of the South African Municipal Workers Union Petrus Mashishi, to look into the management of the federation.

Sowetan could not establish if it had presented any report during the meeting. Auditing firm Sizwe Ntsaluba Gobodo was also supposed to look into alleged financial irregularities relating to the selling and purchasing of Cosatu's properties.

Sowetan understands that the CEC meeting attended by presidents and secretaries of Cosatu's affiliated unions was tense, with some leaders calling for Vavi to be suspended.

But in the end, it decided against the motion to suspend Vavi, but that the investigation go ahead to report back at the next CEC.
