IN A bid to crack down on the tense situation at Marikana, more than 100 police officers aided by the army in nyalas and helicopters descended on the informal settlements around Lonmin mine on Saturday morning.
Truck loads of weapons were seized and an estimated 13 people were arrested. The government's move comes a month after the tragic Marikana shootings that left 34 people dead on August 16, after the long-standing stalemate between workers and mine management.
Meanwhile, in Johannesburg, the IFP marched to the SABC offices in Auckland Park to hand over a memorandum about their dissatisfaction with the lack of coverage of the political party by the state broadcaster.
