LOGISTICAL problems could get in the way of the Eastern Cape ANC's OR Tambo regional conference, scheduled to be reconvened this weekend.
The party's provincial spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane said the venue that was previously used for the botched conference - Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha - was likely to be unavailable.
"It could possibly sit this weekend, but its the Satma (SA Traditional Music Awards) this weekend, so we also need to take that into consideration," said Qoboshiyane.
The ANC's top leaders ordered that the conference, which was adjourned earlier this month by the provincial executive committee (PEC) over allegations of vote rigging, be resumed.
The PEC was told to oversee proceedings and ensure that the conference is convened this weekend using the same credentials.
This follows a complaint by regional leaders on the PEC's decision to stop the conference. They claimthe provincial leaders did that because a faction supporting President Jacob Zuma for a second term had lost to the one supporting his deputy Kgalema Motlanthe.
Votes recorded showed that there was an additional four votes than the number of registered delegates. Regional chairman Thandekile Sabisa, who stood for re-election, defeated pro-Zuma challenger William Ngozi by 296 votes to 295.
OR Tambo is the second biggest region, which can influence the outcome in Mangaung in Free State where the ANC will elect its new leaders. - nhlabathih@sowetan.co.za
