Police have arrested 83 Western Cape fathers in a day for not paying child maintenance
Provincial justice department head Hishaam Mohamed said the blitz on Wednesday was designed to send a message to defaulters to start paying up and take responsibility for their children.
“If they can afford luxurious goods like iPads and iPhones, then they can pay maintenance.
“Among those who were arrested are taxi drivers and taxi owners. One was the owner of three taxis.”
The latest string of arrests brought to 725 the number of defaulters nabbed this year.
According to the report, fathers in the province owed about R9.7 million in maintenance.
Mitchells Plain had the most maintenance money outstanding, followed by Worcester and Grassy Park.
