TRANSPORT Minister Sbu Ndebele believes the taxi industry is on the right track to change how the transport system is viewed in the country.

Ndebele was speaking yesterday in Welkom where he officially launched the South African National Taxi Council Transport Academy, the first of its kind in South Africa.

He said the academy was aimed at providing the necessary skills to both taxi drivers and owners.

"We are providing a platform for the advancement of critical skills within the taxi industry and develop a pool of resources that are competent and professional in executing our function," Ndebele said.

He reiterated the importance of skills development within the industry.

"We are seeking to improve and deepen the level of understanding and capacity in operational procedures," Ndebele said. The academy is expected to open officially in January. Registration will open from November 15 to December 15. The three-day to three-month courses will be open to all SA taxi drivers.
