THE Congress of the People has called on the police to arrest KwaZulu-Natal economic development and tourism MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu and legislature speaker Peggy Nkonyeni.

Mabuyakhulu and Nkonyeni allegedly solicited a R1 million bribe from a businessman Gaston Savoi in return for a government tender worth R43 million in 2007.

Tender processes were not followed when the businessman secured the tender to supply water purification plants to hospitals and clinics.

The bribe was allegedly paid to the ANC as a donation when Mabuyakhulu was still the ANC provincial treasurer and Nkonyeni was the health MEC.

"These are the signs that if we do not fight these corrupt monsters, our country will slowly become a banana republic. This unbecoming ANC top brass corrupt behaviour and arrogance has become a culture on its own, harbouring and protecting criminals in government," said Cope deployee in KwaZulu-Natal, Ndzipho Kalipa.
