PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma says he will not support calls by the DA to withdraw the Employment Equity Amendment Bill.

Replying to a question from Hanif Hoosen of the ID in Parliament yesterday, Zuma said: "Parliament must have an opportunity to discuss the bill."

The Employment Equity Act of 1998 says employers must take into account the "demographic profile of the national and regional economically active population" when implementing affirmative action.

But the new bill says only that the "demographic profile of the economically active population" must be taken into account by employers when hiring.
