The original Soweto derby between Moroka Swallows and Orlando Pirates provided much excitement that was nearly spoiled by television anchors inadvertently nailing their colours to the mast.

Main anchor at SABC Sport Tshepo Mabona was almost on his feet with glee, while soccer analyst Marks Maponyane tried to hide the disappointment on his face when Birds striker Siyabonga Nomvethe ballooned his spot kick. The miss revived Pirates's chances.

Thomas Mlambo at SuperSport was also beside himself with joy when Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi slammed home the winning penalty.

They might be human and fallible but doesn't the very nature of their job demand some semblance of impartiality?

It does not help television commentary if analysts and anchors speak from embedded positions.

Just a thought.
