SARDINE frenzy is hotting up on the KwaZulu-Natal coast but local fishermen aren't happy.

Yesterday hundreds of Durbanites rushed to the beach with buckets, fish nets and plastic packets to grab what fish they could.

Fishermen, who sell the sardines for R500 a basket, had their hands full trying to keep the "scavengers" away.

"We hire the boats, hire the labour and use our nets to pull the shoals to the shore . but people run in with their buckets to take what we have worked for. This is so unfair.

"We make a living from this for two months of the year and follow the sardines but everywhere we go we deal with people trying to cash in on our catches," said Mohammed Shameem.
