AFTER years of neglect Durban's historic Addington Children's Hospital will be given a major facelift.

Provincial health department spokesperson Chris Maxon said yesterday: "The hospital will be renovated. The MEC (Sbongiseni Dhlomo) will on Thursday (today) unveil the project."

The children's hospital, which had become an eyesore, was situated next to Addington Hospital, and had been frequented by vagrants for years as authorities struggled to decide what to do with it. Maxon said it will cost R200million to revamp it.

"The department is asking for donations," he said.

The hospital was completed in 1931. It was built when it was discovered that there was a lack of specialist facilities for children. - Sapa
