A WOMAN from Pongola, who defrauded the South African Social Security Agency in KwaZulu-Natal, was sentenced to a fine of R10000 or 12 months imprisonment.

Yesterday the Pongola magistrate's court sentenced Ntandoyenkosi Prudence Buthelezi, 29, for fraud amounting to R2500.

Her sentence was suspended for three years on condition that she is not convicted of fraud, theft or attempted to commit the two crimes.

Buthelezi's sentencing comes after the agency dismissed her in June 2010 following an internal disciplinary hearing that found her guilty of fraud.

Buthelezi allegedly siphoned off grants meant for the poor.

Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said Buthelezi had stolen money that was meant to reach poor beneficiaries.

He said Buthelezi had channelled the money into her own account.

Sassa chief executive Coceko Pakade said Buthelezi's sentencing would send a clear message to other staff.
