He obtained a BA degree from the University of the North (Turfloop). He was a member of Sasco.
He taught at several schools before getting fully involved with the ANC.
l 1983 - Selebi was a representative of the World Federation of Democratic Youth in Budapest, Hungary.
l 1987 - elected head of the ANC Youth League and member of the NEC of the ANC.
l 1991 - was responsible for the repatriation of ANC exiles.
l 1993 - head of ANC welfare department.
l 1995 - was appointed SA's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
l 1998 - received human rights award from the International Service for Human Rights.
l 2000 - appointed national police commissioner.
l 2002 - appointed vice-president of Interpol in the African region.
l 2004 - promoted to president of Interpol
l 2007 - criticised after suggesting that prostitution and public drinking be legalised during the 2010 World Cup.
l 2007 - admitted to being friends with drug trafficker and murder accused Glenn Agliotti, saying "he is my friend finish and klaar".
l September 10 2007 - a warrant of arrest was issued by the NPA over allegations of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
l 2008 January - Mbeki suspends Selebi, putting him on an "extended leave of absence" and appointed Timothy Williams to act in his place. The next day Selebi resigned from Interpol.
l January 31 2008 - Selebi appears in the Randburg magistrate's court charged with corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
