BERNE - Tour of Spain champion Alejandro Valverde was banned for two years yesterday for an anti-doping violation by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The court made the decision after an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Cycling Union.

The ban was backdated to January 1. Valverde, who will miss the next two Tour de France races, was already serving a two-year ban from racing in Italy. - Reuters
