PREMIER Soccer League chief executive Kjetil Siem says Saturday's mishaps caused by traffic congestion on the roads towards Soccer City Stadium should never happen again.
The stadium hosted the Nedbank Cup final that Bidvest Wits won 3-0 against AmaZulu as part of the official opening of the refurbished stadium. Among the dignitaries at the game was President Jacob Zuma, a self-confessed AmaZulu supporter.
"We had to delay the match for 30 minutes," said Siem. "It was extremely important that we had this match at this venue with only weeks remaining before the World Cup.
"The logistics inside the stadium are alright. The problem is getting to it. It was a lesson learnt regarding traffic control and signage. We also can't have road works on matches like this."
The match came to life in the second half with a dramatic end.
Brazilian Fabricio Rodrigues put the Students ahead in the 76th minute. He came on in the 56th minute for Marawaan Bantam. Sifiso Vilakazi scored a brace in the dying minutes.
Victorious coach Roger de Sa paid tribute to his charges.
"We rode our luck because they put us under pressure. I'm delighted for my young players who all played well. I looked at the trophy and there were only two names there, Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi Sundowns, who are the only teams I have ever played for and I felt that Wits also had to be there," said De Sa.
AmaZulu coach Neil Tovey, who was without Thabo Mabaso, Warren Bishop and Marc van Heerden (all suspended), said he needed the whole team to come to the party, but they didn't.
Even Zuma's presence could not inspire Usuthu.
