THE derailment of a passenger train in Randfontein, west of Johannesburg, will be investigated by the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR), the organisation said on Saturday.

The Shosholoza Meyl Diamond Express derailed at the entrance of a railway siding outside the Randfontein station at 5am on Saturday, spokesman Carvel Webb said in a statement. No one was injured and passengers were bussed from the station.

"RSR's inspectors will investigate the condition of the relevant signalling equipment and track infrastructure as well as associated operating procedures and train handling," Webb said.

"The RSR follows a rigorous protocol in investigating occurrences to ensure that all possible factors are considered in determining the root cause of and contributory factors to an accident," he said. - Sapa
