ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said a truck carrying a load of tyres crashed into the back of another truck about 40km outside Bloemfontein on the road to Cape Town at about 8.30am.
"When paramedics arrived on the scene they found the two trucks severely mangled," Vermaak said.
The mother, in her 20s, and her daughter, about one year old, were believed to have been passengers in the rear truck.
Two other occupants of the rear truck, as well as the driver of the front truck, sustained only minor injuries and were assessed on the scene.
The cause of the accident was not clear, Vermaak said. - Sapa
