PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma will today launch a new campaign that will see every South African citizen registered with the Department of Home Affairs within a year.
Zuma, Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Deputy Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba will unveil the new National Population Register (NPR) at the Ntlaza Sports Field in Libode, Mthatha, this morning.
The births of a number of children under the age of 15 years are still to be registered, said Dlamini- Zuma. By October 2011, the practice of allowing people to register their births even when they are more than 15 years old will be discontinued.
Within a year, the NPR will contain the information of everyone living legally in South Africa.
Dlamini-Zuma said new hospital IT systems will ensure that all births are registered within 30 days in a bid to stop the widespread practice of registering children's births years after they are born.
