FOUR employees of the King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality in the Eastern Cape have been arrested for fraud.

Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said yesterday the special commercial crimes unit arrested three cashiers and their supervisor for fraud on Wednesday.

More arrests were expected.

The fraud relates to the disappearance of R2,2million from the municipality's coffers in 2007.

Municipal spokesperson Sonwabo Mampoza said the fraud was uncovered after the municipality hired PricewaterhouseCoopers to do an audit of its books.

"Six workers collecting money at the rates hall were involved.

"Some of them resigned before they could appear before the disciplinary committee of the municipality," Mampoza said.

They were all suspended after the fraud was discovered.

"Two of them have appealed to the municipality not to fire them," Mampoza said. - Sapa
